1. Polynomial

In mathematics, a polynomial is an expression consisting of variables (also called indeterminates) and coefficients, that involves only the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and non-negative integer exponents of variables. An example of a polynomial of a single indeterminate, x, is x2 ? 4x + 7. An example in three variables is x3 + 2xyz2 ? yz + 1. Polynomials appear in many areas of mathematics and science. For example, they are used to form polynomial equations, which encode a wide range of problems, from elementary word problems to complicated scientific problems; they are used to define polynomial functions, which appear in settings ranging from basic chemistry and physics to economics and social science; they are used in calculus and numerical analysis to approximate other functions. In advanced mathematics, polynomials are used to construct polynomial rings and algebraic varieties, central concepts in algebra and algebraic geometry.

1. Polynomial

In mathematics, polynomials are the simplest class of mathematical expressions. A polynomial is an expression constructed from variables and constants, using only the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and non-negative integer exponents. However, the division by a constant is allowed, because the multiplicative inverse of a non-zero constant is also a constant. For example, x2 ? x/4 + 7 is a polynomial, but x2 ? 4/x + 7x3/2 is an algebraic expression that is not a polynomial, because its second term involves a division by the variable x, and also because its third term contains an exponent that is not a non-negative integer. A polynomial function is a function which is defined by a polynomial. Sometimes, the term polynomial is reserved for the polynomials that are explicitly written as a sum of terms involving only multiplications and exponentiation by non negative integer exponents. In this context, the other polynomials are called polynomial expressions. For example, is a polynomial expression that represents the same thing as the polynomial The term "polynomial", as an adjective, can also be used for quantities that can be expressed as a polynomial of some parameter, as in polynomial time, which is used in computational complexity theory.
